Painting in Iran is an ancient form of art with a long history. This art was earlier used to illustrate the epical, poetic and the age-old love stories. It was also used to decorate the border of poetry books, book covers, and pen-cases made of leather or wood.
It was not until the Safavid period that painting was considered a form of art and became an independent subject. Among the first artists whose work was consider an artwork is miniatures of Reza Abbassi.
Towards the end of 19th century along with the heat of the impressionist style of painting in France, the artist Kamal-ulmolk was sent to Paris. The artist was asked to copy some of the painting canvases by Rembrandt. This was the first amalgamation of Iranian painting style with European styles, and became popular during Qajar period. The first academy of fine arts in Iran was established some forty-five years ago and trained many known artists of today. The Iranian art encompasses the findings of the modern world, thoughts and the needs of today's people with touch of the orient.
